On Monday, June 5, 2023, the Disarmament, Demobilization, Community Recovery and Stabilization Program (PDDRC-S), Beni sector, received twelve (12) Mai-Mai combatants from multiple groups who had turned themselves in to the Congolese army.
In the presence of military and civilian officials, including those from the United Nations, the ceremony was conducted by the Sokola 1 Grand-Nord operational sector. These former militants, according to Captain Antony Mualushayi, a spokesperson for the mentioned sector, responded to the call of the Congolese administration.
“We have the honor to introduce to you 12 of our countrymen who engaged in several atrocities against civilians when they were in the woods”.
They were members of a number of military organizations, including the Afpp/Ap from Kabidon, the Uplc from Mayani, the Kyandenga and the Nduma Renovated from Guidon. They had three AK-47 rifles between them.
Captain Antony Mualushayi said, “We are formally giving them over to the official institution established by the government to continue the procedure.
“This is just the start. Let others in the bush do the same, and they will be welcomed,” he says.
It should be emphasized that a number of dangerous armed organizations have been operating in Greater North Kivu for some time. These militias abuse the civilian people frequently.
This army colonel appeals to the people still living in the barren landscape to join their fellow soldiers in serving their country.
