In the days leading up to the coronation, a vast crowd began to assemble in the heart of London. Aiming to secure a great spot for Saturday, well-wishers rushed to The Mall on Wednesday afternoon while waving flags and donning crowns.
Just hours before King Charles III is crowned, police have detained the leader of the Republic anti-monarchy party.
Graham Smith, the leader of Republic, was shown on Twitter sitting on the ground surrounded by police officers and claimed that he had been arrested on Saturday morning.
During the inauguration of King Charles III
The organisation had said that it will stage the largest anti-British monarchy demonstration in contemporary times. To stand out, protesters carried placards that read “Not My King” while wearing yellow t-shirts.
They booed or sang songs like “He is just a normal man” during the majority of the service.
However, London police erected a ring around the crowd because they had issued a warning that they would intervene if demonstrators attempted to “obstruct the enjoyment and celebration” of the day.
Among the demonstrators was 57-year-old Devonian salesman Kevin John, who described the situation as “disgusting and utterly over the top.”
The police’s actions are also incredibly unproductive since all they have accomplished is to give us a tonne of free exposure. It is really insane.
Police said they had detained four persons on suspicion of producing a public disturbance and three people on suspicion of having items to commit a crime, however they did not confirm Smith’s detention.
Hundreds of Republic signs, the company reported, had been taken.
Signs reading “Abolish the monarchy, feed the people” were carried aloft during protests in Glasgow, Scotland, and Cardiff, Wales. On social media, many compared the pomp and spectacle of the coronation with the UK’s rising cost of living issue.
Video from the scene shows a large police presence handcuffing and removing roughly 15 demonstrators.
“Minembwe Capital News has not been independently on the scene ground “
a non-profit advocacy group claimed the coronation arrests were more in line with what one could see in Moscow than London.
