The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs updated its travel guidance. “At this time, travel to Mali is not recommended at all due to the intense regional tensions. French nationals in Mali are encouraged to exercise the utmost caution, it said.
According to the French online visa service provider Capago, the French embassy’s reorganization of services due to the higher security classification prevents it from issuing visas until further notice.
The reclassification was unexpected, the foreign ministry of Mali stated on Wednesday.
Following the military coup that overthrew elected president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita in Bamako in 2020, relations between France and Mali deteriorated.
Mali’s foreign ministry announced in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) that it would reciprocally stop issuing new visas to French nationals at its embassy in Paris.
This response comes after a French ruling. The French embassy in the capital of Mali, Bamako, stopped issuing new visas on Monday after France’s foreign ministry classified the nation as being in a “red zone” of nations.
